Changes in Delivery Program Motors and Gear motors

Regulation (EC) 640/2009 - implementing Directive 2005/32/EC: Ecodesign requirements for electric motors

Electric motors are the most important type of electric load in industries within the European Community where motors are used in the production processes. The systems in which these motors are operated account for about 70 % of the electricity consumed by the industry. There is a total potential for cost-effective improvement of the energy efficiency of these motor systems by about 20 % to 30 %. One of the major factors in such improvements is the use of energy efficient motors. Therefore, the Commission of the European Communities has decided that:

  • From 16 June 2011, motors shall not be less efficient than the IE2 (formerly known as EFF1) efficiency level.
  • From 1 January 2015, motors with a rated output of 7,5-375 kW shall not be less efficient than the IE3 efficiency level or meet the IE2 efficiency level and be equipped with a variable speed drive.
  • From 1 January 2017, all motors with a rated output of 0,75-375 kW shall not be less efficient than the IE3 efficiency level or meet the IE2 efficiency level and be equipped with a variable speed drive.

This Regulation applies for following electric, single speed, three-phase squirrel cage induction motor:

  • has 2 to 6 poles
  • has rated voltage of Un up to 1000V
  • has rated output Pn between 0,75kW and 375kW is rated on the basis of continuous duty operation (S1)
Definition of S1 by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC): the motor works at a constant load for enough time to reach temperature equilibrium (typically approx. 1 hour).

It does not apply to motors specifically designed to operate:

  • at altitudes exceeding 1000m above sea-level.
  • where ambient air temperatures exceed 40°C.
  • in potentially explosive atmospheres as defined in Directive 94/9/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council.

From the 6th of June 2011 SPX will only supply motors & gear motors which comply with this regulation.
